Understanding the Term “Creole”

Historical Origins

In colonial Louisiana, Creole referred to individuals born in the New World, regardless of racial background—distinguishing them from those born in Europe.

Modern Usage

Today, Creole in Louisiana typically describes people of mixed ancestry—often French, Spanish, African, and Native American—with deep regional roots and a unique, vibrant cultural identity.

Diverse Ancestry, Shared Culture

Creole identity comes in many shades and shapes. What unites us is a shared connection to Louisiana’s cultural traditions, language, music, family ties, faith, and history.
